Steps for Sowing Grass
1) Rotovate or dig the soil (around 25 cm), remove weeds, and level the ground. If desired, apply soil improvers before sowing.
2) First, sow the outer edges with Ornamental Grass Seed – Elegant.
3) Then sow across the entire surface with Ornamental Grass Seed – Elegant, once lengthwise and once widthwise.
4) Lightly rake in the grass seed (0.5 – 1cm).
5) Firm or roll the sown area.
6) If it doesn’t rain within 24 hours of sowing, water gently with a fine spray.
7) When the grass reaches about 10cm in height, it’s time for its first mow. Do not cut it too short right away, but reduce the height gradually each week to about 3-4cm.
8) Fertilise the lawn for the first time a week after germination with Lawn Feed All-In-One and then three times annually (in spring/summer/autumn).
Sowing Period
Sowing period: March – November.
Sowing in Early Autumn:
Early autumn is a prime time for grass sowing. The soil retains the warmth of the summer for a while. This heat, combined with moisture, creates an ideal environment for grass seeds to germinate. Grass sowing can often start once the hottest and driest summer periods are over, typically in September, but it could be as late as October.
Sowing in Spring:
Spring is also a suitable time to sow grass, albeit slightly less ideal than early autumn. The often very cold winter and chilly nights make it difficult for seeds to germinate. Birds might easily pilfer the seeds. Additionally, a lot of weeds sprout during this period. Uprooting weeds that have taken root in your lawn can be challenging. We recommend sowing in spring from about the end of March to the end of May so that the soil is warm enough for grass growth, yet a dry spell is avoided.
