Controlling Moss in Lawns with Iron Sulfate

Moss in lawns does not have a single cause. It is often the result of factors such as acidic soil, poor fertility, excessive moisture, or mowing too short. When grass weakens, moss takes the opportunity to spread. Prevention is better than cure, but most lawn owners will face moss growth at some point.

For optimal lawn health, we recommend applying Organifer Lawn Fertilizer All-In-One three times a year (spring, summer, autumn) after removing dead moss. This will help keep your grass in peak condition. If the soil pH is below 5.5, we recommend liming with Organifer Lime to restore balance.

When to Use Iron Sulfate?

Apply early spring (March/April) or early autumn (September/October) at a rate of 25 g/m² on stressed and moss-infested lawns. For best results, apply at least one week before scarifying the lawn. While often called a moss killer, iron sulfate also strengthens plants and improves lawn resilience. Moss will die within a few days, and the grass will recover more effectively. Temperatures above 10°C enhance its effectiveness.

Instructions for Use – Iron Sulfate Fertilizer

For best results, apply iron sulfate in dry weather, ideally just before a rain shower. Repeat the treatment if necessary. Iron sulfate works quickly, and once it has taken effect, rake out the dead moss from the lawn.

We do not recommend applying during rainfall, not because of poor spreading results, but because iron sulfate can cause stains. If it comes into contact with clothing, shoes, or paving, it may leave permanent rust stains. Avoid walking on the lawn for the first few days after application until the product has been fully absorbed into the soil and can no longer cause staining.

Caution with Iron Sulfate

Iron sulfate can cause rust stains on outdoor surfaces such as concrete, tiles, and paving stones, as well as on clothing. Immediately remove any fertilizer that accidentally lands on paved areas. Be mindful of fertilizer residues on shoe soles and pet paws. Avoid walking on treated lawns until the fertilizer has been thoroughly watered in.

Storage

Store in a dry place between 5°C and 25°C, away from direct sunlight. Exposure to moisture, excessive heat, or extreme cold may alter the product's properties and accelerate its decomposition. Keep out of reach of children and pets. After application, thoroughly wash hands and any skin areas that have come into contact with the product. Do not allow the product to enter wastewater or open water sources. Use within six months. Improper use or storage voids any liability.
