Strong Growth and High Organic Matter Production

Frost-Sensitive Green Manure & Cover Crop Seed Mix is a diverse mixture of six plant species developed for strong establishment, dense soil cover and high organic matter production. The high proportion of Japanese oats supports rapid growth and helps produce abundant plant material well into autumn. This creates effective soil coverage between main crops while adding valuable biomass above and below the soil surface. Different root systems develop throughout several soil layers, helping create a loose and fertile growing environment. The mixture is suitable as green manure, cover crop and catch crop after harvest, between crops or on temporarily unused soil.

Natural Breakdown After Frost

The frost-sensitive composition is one of the main advantages of this green manure mix. Strong growth continues during the main establishment period, while stronger frost naturally stops further plant development. The remaining plant material gradually breaks down and contributes organic matter to the soil.

This natural process reduces the amount of active vegetation that needs to be managed before the following crop. The mixture is therefore well suited to systems where easy incorporation, reduced soil cultivation and efficient spring preparation are important.

Deep Rooting for Improved Soil Structure

Japanese oats, phacelia, niger and sunflower create intensive root growth through different parts of the soil profile. Japanese oats develop deep roots, while niger can reach even deeper soil layers. This combination helps open the soil structure below the surface and creates more space for air, water and future crop roots.

Phacelia, niger and sunflower add further root diversity, helping create a well-rooted soil environment. The result is improved soil structure throughout different depths and better growing conditions for the crop that follows.

More Organic Matter for Fertile Soil

The mixture produces valuable plant material both above and below the soil surface. After frost, this biomass gradually becomes part of the soil and contributes to humus formation and long-term soil fertility.

The high proportion of Japanese oats plays an important role in organic matter production, while the other species add different types of roots and plant residues. This diverse organic material supports a fertile soil structure and helps prepare productive growing conditions for the following season.

Supports Active Soil Life

A diverse root system creates different zones of biological activity throughout the soil. Roots from phacelia, niger, sunflower, Japanese oats, vetch and buckwheat provide organic material at different depths and support a varied soil environment.

Greater root diversity contributes to active soil processes and creates favourable conditions for soil life. Combined with the organic material left after frost, the mixture helps build a productive soil environment for future crops.

Dense Ground Cover

Rapid establishment and strong plant growth create dense soil coverage during the main growing period. This makes productive use of open areas between crops and protects the soil surface during autumn.

Dense vegetation also reduces the available space for unwanted plants and helps limit direct exposure of the soil to heavy rainfall. The mixture is therefore suitable for crop rotation, vegetable growing and agricultural fields where temporary soil cover is required.

Nutrient Retention Between Crops

Growing cover crop plants absorb available nutrients from the soil and keep them within the developing plant material. This makes productive use of nutrients during periods when no main crop is growing.

After frost, the remaining plant material gradually breaks down and returns organic matter to the soil. This supports efficient nutrient use within crop rotation and helps maintain fertile growing conditions for the following crop.

Better Water Movement Through the Soil

The combination of fine, deep and very deep roots creates natural channels throughout different soil layers. These channels support water movement into the soil and create more space around future crop roots.

Improved soil structure and increased organic matter also support moisture retention. Together, these benefits help create a balanced soil environment with better conditions for water, air and root development.

Suitable for No-Till and Reduced Cultivation

The frost-sensitive composition makes the mixture especially suitable for no-till and reduced cultivation systems. After stronger frost, active plant growth naturally stops and the remaining plant material can gradually break down on the soil surface.

This reduces the need for intensive removal or heavy incorporation before the next crop. Valuable plant residues remain within the growing system and continue contributing organic matter while supporting efficient crop rotation.

Dosage

4 to 4.5 g/m²

40 to 45 kg/ha

Application

Sowing period: June to October

Suitable for all soil types

Suitable as green manure, cover crop and catch crop between main crops

Best results are achieved when sufficient growing time remains before stronger frost.

Sowing Instructions

  1. Prepare the soil by loosening the growing area and removing existing weeds. Create an even seedbed before sowing.
  2. Sow the outer edges of the growing area first to achieve even coverage.
  3. Spread the seeds once lengthwise and once widthwise across the area for balanced distribution.
  4. Lightly rake the seeds into the upper soil layer to approximately 0.5 cm depth.
  5. Firm the soil after sowing to create good contact between the seeds and soil.
  6. When no rainfall occurs within 48 hours after sowing, water gently. Maintain sufficient soil moisture during germination and establishment.

Storage

Store the seeds in a cool, dry and dark place. Keep the packaging tightly closed and protect the seeds from moisture, direct sunlight and high temperatures.
