Sowing / Overseeding and Rejuvenation

New Sowing

A hay meadow can be sown from March through October. For optimal establishment, we recommend approximately 60–65 kg of grass seed per hectare, or about 70 kg for smaller plots. With precision mechanical sowing, 60 kg per hectare is usually sufficient. A good start requires adequate fertilisation – Organifer Meadow Fertiliser is ideal for this purpose. We recommend taking a soil sample before sowing to identify and correct any deficiencies in time.

Overseeding and Rejuvenation

Over time, hay meadows may age and lose productivity. Fine, high-yield grasses are replaced by coarser varieties or undesirable weeds. Other factors such as frost, drought, or heavy harvesting can also damage the turf and create bare patches. Overseeding with approximately 30 kg of grass seed per hectare keeps the hay meadow young, vital, and productive. Mow the plot short beforehand and lightly loosen the top layer with a harrow or rake. Use a specialist overseeding machine where possible. With sufficient moisture, the seed germinates quickly and develops into a dense, strong, and productive hay sward that delivers reliable yields for years to come.
