TRUSTED PERFORMANCE

Trusted by professionals & gardeners

Versatile and Drought-Resistant Variety

The Desiree seed potato, a classic Dutch variety from 1962, is renowned for its versatility and reliable performance. With its striking red skin, long oval tubers, and light yellow flesh, this potato offers both visual appeal and culinary versatility. Suitable for boiling, baking, salads, and fries, Desiree is an ideal choice for both household and commercial use. Thanks to its exceptional drought resistance, it performs excellently in sandy soils and other dry growing conditions.

Reliable Yield and Uniformity

Desiree potatoes deliver a consistent and reliable yield, even under variable conditions. Its tubers are uniform in shape and size, making them ideal for commercial sales and sorting. The plant grows tall foliage, contributing to a strong plant structure. While its foliage has moderate resistance to Phytophthora, the tubers are reasonably resistant and maintain their quality across different conditions.

Excellent Storage Properties

Desiree potatoes are firm, resistant to damage, and store exceptionally well. For optimal storage, it is recommended to keep the potatoes at a temperature between 4-8°C. Under these conditions, the quality is preserved, sweetness is prevented, and the tubers remain in excellent condition for both short- and long-term storage. This makes Desiree seed potatoes a valuable choice for growers seeking a reliable harvest with outstanding storage potential.

Instructions for Use

  1. Soil Preparation: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Work the soil to a depth of 30 cm to create a loose structure that promotes root development.
  2. Pre-Sprouting (Optional):Start pre-sprouting the potatoes about four weeks before planting in a warm, light environment. This process encourages the formation of strong shoots, accelerates growth, and shortens the time to harvest.
  3. Planting: Timing: Plant seed potatoes early in spring, after the frost period. Spacing: Plant the potatoes in straight rows, leaving approximately 40 cm between plants and 60 cm between rows. Depth: Plant the potatoes about 10 cm deep, with the shoots facing upwards.
  4. Care: Gradually add more soil around the plants (earthing up) about six weeks after planting. This supports stem growth, promotes soil warming, and ensures good drainage. Use Organifer fertilizers and start applying Organifer plant enhancers, such as Phytophthora concentrate, ten weeks after planting to ensure optimal plant health.
  5. Harvesting: Begin harvesting 90 days after planting for early varieties and 120 days for late varieties, depending on weather conditions and the potato variety. Use a digging machine or fork to carefully lift the potatoes from the ground without damaging the tubers.

Storage

Store seed potatoes in a cool, dry, and dark place to prevent sprouting and spoilage. Ensure adequate ventilation to avoid moisture buildup and ethylene accumulation, which can cause mold and rot. Avoid storing potatoes near ethylene-emitting fruits, such as apples, as this can accelerate sprouting. Regularly inspect and remove any damaged potatoes to minimize the spread of diseases. Use breathable storage materials, such as paper or fabric bags, to ensure proper air circulation.
