Classic French Variety with Refined, Waxy Texture

Charlotte seed potatoes grow into medium-sized, oval-shaped potato tubers with a very waxy texture. Often described as the modern Roseval, Charlotte potato is especially valued for its firm structure and refined taste. The smooth skin and shallow eyes make these potatoes easy to prepare, while the natural appearance adds to their appeal as high-quality potatoes for planting. The Charlotte potato variety originates from France and is a cross between the Hansa and Danaé varieties. Introduced to the market around 1980, Charlotte seed potatoes have since become widely grown in Belgium and other parts of Europe. As mid-early seed potatoes, they produce a fairly high yield and deliver consistent results. The slightly nutty flavour of the skin makes these gold potato seeds especially suitable for cooking with the skin on. Charlotte potatoes are delicious when steamed, used in ragout, or prepared in refined everyday dishes.

Instructions for Use

  1. Soil preparation: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 30 cm to promote healthy root and tuber development.
  2. Pre-sprouting (optional): Pre-sprouting can be started about three to four weeks before planting in a light, frost-free environment to encourage strong shoots and faster establishment.
  3. Planting: Plant after the risk of frost has passed. Maintain around 40 cm between plants and 60 cm between rows. Plant potato tubers about 10 cm deep with the shoots facing upward.
  4. Care: Earth up plants gradually after about six weeks to protect developing tubers and improve drainage. Regular watering and balanced fertilisation support steady growth.
  5. Harvesting: Harvest Charlotte potatoes once the foliage begins to die back, usually between 95 and 115 days after planting. Lift potato sets carefully to avoid tuber damage.

Storage

Store seed potatoes in a cool, dry, and dark place with good ventilation before planting. After harvest, store potatoes under similar conditions to maintain quality. Avoid exposure to light and moisture, and regularly inspect stored potato tubers to remove damaged ones.
